THE NURTURE OF NATURE

We think we can preserve the life we see

by simply storing it genetic’ly,

or in museums of taxidermy

or zoos, that almost let it wander free.

An animal that’s caged might perform stunts

But wont display natural behavior

the tiger that is fed no longer hunts,

and the zookeeper is not its savior.

Specimens for future generations

can not convey the wonder that’s been lost.

“Nature Exhibits” are decorations,

reminding us what our progress has cost.

Life only can be maintained in the wild.

Unless vivacious, it’s just been defiled.

James Ph. Kotsybar's haiku achieved Martian orbit on September 22, 2014, becoming the first literature to another world, aboard NASA's MAVEN spacecraft. His poem, "Martian Connoisseur" has been circling the Red Planet for over 1,000 Earth days, however, Guinness Book of World Records, the Nobel Committee and Pulitzer Prize Directors have yet to weigh in on this record accomplishment.
